Role Description:

  As part of the process team, the Process Pipe Designer I contributes to the creation of design documents to support the DPS Design Deliverables Matrix. The Designer I will provide generalized design support, draft Process Flow Diagrams and 2D Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), annotate piping systems in both 2D and 3D environments, develop equipment blocks for use in a 3D model, route basic line types in 2D and 3D environments, and generate project drawings for review by Senior Pipe Designers. The Process Pipe Designer I works closely with the engineering team and more experienced designers for guidance and direction on day-to-day activities and other work packages. The Process Pipe Designer I must adapt at learning new software skills and develop strong desire to learn new concepts relating to piping design. The Process Pipe Designer I focuses on mastery of software used, 2D drafting techniques, and modeling process utility systems in a 3D environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide piping design support to the process engineering and piping team
  • Draft design documentation in 2D and 3D design platforms and coordination tools required for daily work (i.e. AutoCAD, CADWorx, NavisWorks, Revit).
  • Demonstrate comprehension of industry recognized pipe design codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Read P&IDs, equipment layouts, and architectural plans and understand their relationship to develop accurate and coordinated piping models per industry best practices.
  • Produce new drawings in the required software platform per DPS procedures and model critical/hygienic utility systems (i.e., Water-For-Injection, clean steam, process gasses, etc.) in accordance with the provided P&IDs and other design documentation.
  • Design process equipment blocks in 3D using an understanding of basic geometry and vendor provided equipment details. Correctly place equipment blocks in a 3D model based on available team coordination documents (i.e. Architectural layouts).
  • Perform fieldwork necessary to gather data, check tie-ins, verify design vs. P&IDs, and provide construction support.
  • Deliver complete and accurate design documents that have been thoroughly backchecked for review and approval by a Senior Designer.
  • Attend relevant design and client meetings to gain a better understanding of the project and design work required, asking questions of the internal team as necessary.
  • Develop and present content to small groups in support of department goals and development activities.

Education/Experience: Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Mathematical Ability: Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Software Skills: Proficient in MS Office Suite, PDF Editor (Bluebeam), AutoCAD. CADWorx/Plant3D/Revit. Procore, BIM360, MS Teams or other online platforms
