JOB DESCRIPTION

The Manufacturing Design Engineering (MDE) Team is responsible for evaluating technologies and identifying supply chain solutions that allow us to deliver products to market at scale. This Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) will focus on manufacturing, process development and supplier qualification. This Mechanical Manufacturing Design Engineer is technically proficient enough to work with the engineering design and Operations teams for augmented and virtual reality products. This role requires experience in supply chain and manufacturing to develop hardware tooling/fixture and bring process and technology into mass production. Specific hardware development and fixture knowledge are required, and the candidate must have demonstrated extreme hands-on technical expertise on various tooling components and systems, understood key factors in both the development, process qualification and manufacturing aspects of secondary operations (i.e. metal or plastic CNC machining, welding (laser, Ultrasonic, etc.), glue dispensing, insert molding, sheet metal fabrication, sub-assembly processes, plastic painting, pad/silk printing, CMF (color, material and surface finishing - blasting, polishing, PVD coating or anodization). The role will be to act as the key driver for Tier II technical/process components interface between the Tech Ops Engineering (Quality, Reliability, OPM), Supply Chain, Hardware Engineering (Product Design, Industrial Design) and FATP teams. This role will also interact with the MDE and SQE Team in APAC to implement and execute comprehensive process and technical solutions for our products.

Manufacturing Design Engineering (MDE) - Mechanical Responsibilities

  • Work directly with USA commercial Team to identify the best supplier partners in APAC to meet product requirements from both technical perspective as well as supply chain and manufacturing considerations, and during NPI conceptual design - work on process and manufacturing proposal, provide process flow simulation, manufacturing cycle time simulation, process and cost analysis
  • Work directly with USA hardware engineering team to provide technical proposal, manufacturing solutions at Tier II secondary process operations (post tooling) from equipment selection, material selection, process recommendations, process set-ups and qualifications, manufacturability to mass-production with cost effectiveness, process exploration for NPI program and critical part features and review manufacturability of design. Make recommendations to modify part specifications and tolerances as necessary to adapt development processes for high volume production and support cost effective production
  • Work closely with tooling team to ensure the tooling and process concept are manufacturable with secondary process operations
  • Participate in core team weekly review to present Tier II secondary processes technical proposals to cross-functional and executives to buy in
  • Work closely with the APAC MDE team to come up with technical proposals during NPI conceptual phases that are manufacturable for mass production, cost effective and high yield, review Tier II vendors’ DFM, develop fixture procedures and processes, process qualifications including FAI, Cpk, reliability, production and final acceptance, and drive suppliers to optimize processes for cycle time reduction, automation, cost saving, LEAN manufacturing of the product
  • Interface with APAC MDE and SQE to drive product cosmetic standard on volume manufacturing ramp with industrial design and product design
  • Responsible for MIP (Manufacturing & In-Process Plan) document control for each program throughout the whole process cycle (Proto to Mass Production) with vendor on our products
  • Moderate travel to suppliers (APAC) and work closely with APAC team to establish technical and manufacturing processes required during product development
  • 25% domestic and international travel required

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience in mechanical manufacturing, specifically in technical and process development at NPI, technical problem solving, fixture manufacturing or operation skills
  • Experience working on metal and plastic manufacturing processes, including molding, stamping, die casting, CNC machining, welding, glue dispensing, pad/silk screen, painting, surface finishing, and assembly
  • Experience in conducting DOEs to drive process and data collection
  • Experience with statistical process control tools to analyze data from DOE and part qualification, and to provide solutions and recommendations to engineering team
  • Experience working with APAC supply chain vendors (especially in Mainland China)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering
  • Direct experiences in consumer electronics and wearable devices
  • Experience communicating in Mandarin
