What's the Principal Engineer's role?

As an Engineer well into your career, we know you're an expert at what you do and have a range of experience across multiple technologies. In this role:

• You'll set the technical direction for the team that builds the tools hundreds of Jira frontend engineers use daily to ship high-quality experiences to our customers productively.
• You'll contribute to a core piece of the Jira developer experience and the development lifecycle ranging from automated testing tools, type checking, code quality, and improvements to the development loop.
• You'll play a crucial role in the Jira Frontend platform strategy.
• You'll create solutions that are used by other teams and products in Atlassian. You'll mentor and inspire engineers on the team and set them up for success.
• You'll guide complex initiatives across teams and create impact across products.
• You'll lead code reviews, documentation, and other engineering standards.
• You'll make data-driven solutions to set the standards for building tools.

Your background:

• 10+ years of experience building large-scale frontend applications.
• Understanding of modern frontend ecosystem, including bundling, linting, testing and releasing
• Experience designing/architecting platforms at scale.
• System mindset that considers edge cases, observability, error handling, and integration across external systems.
• Experience debugging problems across systems/repositories and designing solutions that span the whole stack.
• An appetite for platform mindset, building tools, and setting standards.

If you have these skills, even better:

• Experience working on platform teams.
• Experience optimizing applications at scale.
• Knowledge of open-source libraries and frameworks (for example, logging, wiring, testing, and building tools).
• Some industry experience with public cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GAE, Azure).
